Is Deborah the most underrated album from my 2019 yearly Top 20? It might as well be, judging by very modest number of followers Montreal duo garnered so far on social media. They deserve more and this LP is an excellent place to start the exploration.
Frankly, there is not a lot to choose from, because Sorry Girls debuted just in 2017 with Awesome Secrets EP and Deborah is the next step. It's a collection of ten lovelorn songs with ultrasharp hooks and dreamy soundscapes. You could imagine those songs as anthems for leaving alone retro-themed high school disco. As far as genre is concerned, dream pop seems to be the most reasonable etiquette, but this iteration of dream pop seems to be heavily filtered through the 80s pop/dance sensibilities. The most striking example of this approach is H.O.N.E.S.T.Y - the track for which Madonna should have killed to be hers any time between Like a Virgin and a Vogue. Fans of more traditional approach to arragements will especially appreciate Easier and probably girl group-influenced title song (or at least harmonica in Under Cover, even if it's synthesized as I just learned).
I'm aware that plaintive vocals of Heather Foster Kirkpatrick may be too much for certain listeners but I hope everyone will respect her and Dylan Konrad Obront's knack for catchy melodies. Who am I kidding anyway - if you don't like melodic indie pop, you're probably not reading this post in the first place!
