How many people were underwhelmed by this year's Take That album? Probably not so many, because Wonderland swiftly went gold in the UK and is on course to go platinum before the end of the year. I don't know what Nordic countries make of that, but Finns from Since November provided good alternative for piano ballads like Patience with their single Star System.
Since November are singer Tomi Makila known from the bands like The Crash and Magenta Skycode and drummer/programmer Jukka Pekka Elander. Tomi's voice also resembles Gary Barlow's vocal (or is it Mike Owen? I never saw substantial difference between the two). In this day and age of reducing pop music to apeing Major Lazer or Zara Larsson, Star System sounds as gloriously out of style as the other Finns from Sunrise Avenue claimed to be few years ago (to the delight of Polish audiences). Naturally, it doesn't mean it sounds like Stone Age relic - subtle electronic tricks provide interesting counterpoint for piano parts.
BTW, Tomi if you read this, and I know you would - did you know that Lauren Caught My Eye was quite substantial airplay hit in Poland? Major radio station ESKA even set up a competition for the most outlandish explanation of the title. One of the entries pointed at Lau Ren ("cold/dead reindeer" in German). Well, I can only say that Lauren Mayberry from CHVRCHES caught my eye (and ear) more than once so it was nice bit of foreshadowing on The Crash's side.

Thank you so much for this blog post! I can't remember that radio competition but I remember we visited Poland many times and it was a lot of fun. Especially the supporting gig for A-HA in Warsaw. :)
