Throwback: Salt Ashes interview 2014

2016 already birthed few great albums (Wild Nothing, our Polish Rebeka, The Temper Trap, Blossoms, Roosevelt, recently Francis and the Lights) but the bar has been raised especially for two girls already wrote about: Shura and Salt Ashes. It's usually hard for my favorites to meet my expectations but Salt Ashes the LP delivers: it is very sparkly, groovy and passionate. This album proves that consistent disco/electro long plays are still a thing.

Instead of providing regular review, I decided to go for more unusual piece of promo. Pop culture website Outrave.net I collaborated with went through a revamp recently. One of its elements was rendering all my contributions useless, including interview I conducted with Veiga in 2014, in conjunction with Somebody SP release. It was one of my four interviews for Outrave (iirc, one of them never published). I have still less and less time for this blog but given the opportunity I will resurrect them in the future, too (BTW: there is a chance I will write for another, more niche Polish website, but it's a plan for quite a distant future)

What and when sparked your interest in electronic music? Did you know from the start that this would be your signature style, not acoustic recordings?

Daft Punk made me delve into the electronic music world when I heard their Homework record about 5 years ago. Before that I had my head tucked into disco. To be honest I never really thought about my signature style, it just kind of happened and developed. It's still developing ... I don't think that will stop.

You already shared a few songs in 2011. A lot of your current fans weren't lucky enough to check them when they were up (me included). Do you think you would use some of those ideas in your upcoming recordings?

Maybe one or two but the others will probably be swept into a cave now. They served their purpose so they can rest. 

What is an idea behind your stage name? I thought it must be short of Ashley or the other proper name – I see I was wrong ;)

My stage name is a different part of me that I use as an outlet for those dark emotions I don't like to talk about. It just allows me to speak honestly and feel safe at the same time. The name came from the side of a small boat on Brighton beach that I saw on night. 

You are sometimes being compared with Kate Bush. Are you planning to go to her concert this year?

I would adore to see Kate Bush. I will be ready at the right time on the right day to try and book tickets and hope I am lucky enough to get them!

You wanted to see Brodka when she was performing in Brighton. Did you have any other experience with Polish music? Is there anyone apart from her who would you like to check out live?
 

I probably have but didn't know they were Polish !!

Outrave discovered you because you caught one of our writers on Twitter. Do you think that social media makes musician’s life easier or harder?

It's a great way to promote your music for sure I'm just not a social-media-type of person... I don't give it enough time. I'm not one of these people that update their status all the time which you probably need to do to get heard easier. I only like to share things that I find to be interesting. 

If you had an access to the time machine, which era would you like to travel to? 1984? :)

Ha No doubt about it. 

You are not only a singer full of charisma, but your stage presence is also striking. Are you designing your costumes yourself? Who is your biggest fashion inspiration?

Eventually I would love to design my own clothes but at the moment I'm wearing anything that I can grab from a second hand or charity store. If it's got a past and scars I love it. Sounds strange, but the people walking past me on the street are sometimes my biggest inspiration. I love sitting in a coffee shop and watch people, checking what everyone wears. Otherwise Lykke Li is pretty awesome. 

The hook of your single goes ‘Somebody take me away’. What would be a perfect holiday destination for you?

A silent disco on a secluded hot island with disco balls hanging off the trees where I could dance by myself all day and night. 

What are your plans for the rest of 2014? When can we expect new recordings to drop? Is there any chance of the gigs in (continental) Europe?

I'm working on my next single now which will hopefully be followed by more releases and an album. I'm hoping to play more gigs and would love to travel to do so but until I'm asked I have to obey and stay put.

Co i kiedy sprawiło, że zainteresowałaś się muzyką elektroniczną? Czy od razu wiedziałaś, że skupisz się na nagrywaniu w tym stylu, a nie w akustycznych aranżacjach?

Do zagłębienia się w muzykę elektroniczną zainspirowali mnie Daft Punk, a konkretnie ich album Homework, który poznałam około 5 lat temu. Wcześniej słuchałam też często disco. Tak naprawdę nigdy nie zastanawiałam się, z jakim stylem chcę się kojarzyć, samo tak wyszło. Wciąż się rozwijam i chyba nigdy nie przestanę.

Podzieliłaś się już kilkoma piosenkami w 2011 r. Wielu z Twoich obecnych fanów nie miało szczęścia ich poznać (w tym ja). Wykorzystasz chociaż kilka z tych motywów w przyszłości?

Może jeden albo dwa, ale reszta pewnie wyląduje na dnie szuflady. Spełniły swoją rolę, należy im się odpoczynek.

Skąd wziął się pomysł na Twój pseudonim? Długo myślałem, że to zdrobnienie Twojego imienia.

Mój pseudonim to moje drugie ja. Używam go, kiedy chcę się pozbyć negatywnych emocji, o których nie lubię rozmawiać. Pozwala mi mówić otwarcie, a jednocześnie czuć się bezpiecznie. Zobaczyłam tę nazwę na burcie małej łódki którejś nocy na plaży w Brighton.

Czasami jesteś porównywana do Kate Bush. Planujesz iść w tym roku na jej koncert?

Byłoby cudownie. Mam nadzieję, że nadejdzie kiedyś taki dzień, że uda mi się kupić bilety szybciej niż inni i zobaczyć ją na żywo.

Wybierałaś się na koncert Brodki w Brighton. Miałaś inne doświadczenia z polską muzyką? Chciałabyś zobaczyć jeszcze kogoś z naszego kraju występującego na żywo?

Prawdopodobnie tak, ale nie wiedziałam, że to polscy artyści!

Outrave odkryło Cię dzięki temu, że zaczęłaś śledzić jednego z naszych autorów (czyli mnie) na Twitterze. Twoim zdaniem media społecznościowe ułatwiają czy też utrudniają muzykom życie?

To doskonały sposób promocji nagrań, ale nie wiem, czy stworzony dla mnie. Nie poświęcam swoim kontom tyle czasu, ile trzeba. Nie zmieniam co chwilę swojego statusu, a pewnie trzeba tak robić, aby dać się zauważyć. Dzielę się tylko tym, co naprawdę mnie interesuje.

Gdybyś mogła skorzystać z wehikułu czasu, do którego roku byś się wybrała? Do 1984?

No ba!

Przykuwasz uwagę nie tylko głosem, ale i wizerunkiem scenicznym. Sama projektujesz swoje kostiumy? Kto Cię najbardziej do tego inspiruje?

Chciałabym za jakiś czas projektować swoje stroje, ale w tej chwili noszę rzeczy, które wypatrzyłam w sklepach z odzieżą używaną i dobroczynnych. Kocham ciuchy z przeszłością i po przejściach. Może to dziwne, ale najbardziej inspirują mnie ludzie, których mijam na ulicy. Uwielbiam siedzieć w kawiarni obserwując, co mają na sobie inni klienci. Poza tym Lykke Li świetnie się ubiera.

W jednej ze swoich piosenek śpiewasz "Niech ktoś mnie stąd zabierze". Gdzie chciałabyś wyjechać na wakacje?

"Ciche disco" na odludnej tropikalnej wyspie, gdzie mogłabym tańczyć dzień i noc między dyskotekowymi kulami zwisającymi z gałęzi drzew.

Jakie masz plany na resztę 2014 roku? Kiedy możemy spodziewać się Twoich nowych piosenek? Możemy liczyć na koncerty po tej stronie kanału La Manche?

Pracuję teraz nad kolejnym singlem. Mam nadzieję, że po nim pojawią się kolejne i cały album. Chcę grać więcej koncertów i marzę o związanych z tym podróżach, ale zanim otrzymam konkretne propozycje, muszę trzymać te marzenia na wodzy.
