Ones to watch: Zhao

Kenny Zhao is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist (piano, viola, guitar, bass) and producer based in Los Angeles. I discovered him in late 2017 thanks to the track called Lifetime. It smoothly combines alt-R&B melodics, retrowave keyboard flourishes and slightly dream-poppy guitar line to a very emotional effect.

Lifetime rose to no. 73 in my 2017 favorite singles countdown. I must admit I slept on next very decent Zhao's releases, including electro-pop of Magic, urban sounding Ride and Car and slightly hippy-trippy Meltaway. Recently Spotify's Discover Weekly generously recommended me his latest release Feeling Today. It's arguably his most 70s sounding song to date, evoking time of The Bee Gees and Earth, Wind & Fire chart dominance with effortless summery cool. Whether Zhao sticks in the future to this seductive vibe or returns to relative darkness of Lifetime, time will tell.
